Again, argument is futile. All it does is lead to frustration, which leads to other things. This site is very laid back, most of the others will drop the hammer and ban you in a heartbeat, or mock beginners until they leave.

If the rules here are too onerous then there are many other internet sites out there, as you suggested, but you're not going to change this one.

Speaking for myself (always), I like it here. I don't really want major changes, and I do think the current TOS is reasonable.

There was a time this forum didn't have rules and didn't have moderators, other than Dave. I don't know if any of those threads still exist, well, they might at the wayback site.

Free for alls are not very productive, as you can imagine.

 

My Father was a machinist by trade who had a great interest in electronics. In the mid 1940's he saw an audio power amp project in, I guess, "Popular Electronics" or other similar publication. A schematic, parts list and mechanical drawing was all that was supplied by the magazine. My Dad punched out all the tube socket holes, drilled the smaller ones and bent up the sheet stock into a good looking chassis. He wired this amp with very little electronics knowledge, but what he didn't posses in formal education he made up for in desire and ability to teach himself. While this amplifier was AC powered and had a plate supply in excess of 300V,... my Dad inexplicably managed to survive the experience to father me and two sisters, who used this amplifier until about 1959. I myself was weened on wall powered HV tube circuits because solid state circuitry was in transition when I entered this field. A decade had past before I built my first transistor circuit.

This will be my last post here, but before anyone breaks down and cries over my absence, let me assure you that "here" means this topic. I contribute on AAC because electronics has been my profession since 1967 and like many electronics professionals, it's also one of my loves. In my considerable time in this profession I've taken note on "what" the key criteria is that separates a Super Tech or Super Engineer from merely an employable one. Call it love, obsession, addiction, passion or whatever you like but that's what it takes.

I share my knowledge here because it's what I love to do....Sooo.. I have to get back to the 'Projects' section. Yeah, I know that I started this thread but it's futile!

This site is not a perfect paradise. I think some of rules are over the top. And some rules are quite inconsistent. But anyway I do not let it bother me. I accept the rules as is. And then needed I take my business to other sites. It is not a problem to be member of several sites. Think about it this way. Then visiting sites like AAC. You are a guest. And have to play by the house rules.

 

Yep. I was working on a DC fan motor for an air conditioner about 5 o:clock this morning (Eastern USA). Then beenthere woke up and figured out it was in a car. End of discussion.

I could whine about the fan motor not driving the wheels, but it would only lead to frustration. Besides, the OP was quickly leading me toward frustration, so, yay TOS! I feel like I lucked out on that one. What, no evil grin in the smileys? I'll have to settle for a wink.

 

Hi #12, I to was a little miffed on that point. Since when does a 12v fan controler afect car legality. Perhaps next time dont mention CAR. Ford Fairlanes here in Australia used PWM on there fan speed. The switching tansistor sometimes burnt out & was cheeper to repair than to replace the module.

That could have been the problem on that particular fan, but I wouldn't know. I'm so old that I still think there are resistors in series with the heater fans on Fords! A microprocessor for every job nowadays. So much simpler and easier to repair than a 3 pole switch and 2 resistors.

I wuz thinking...we could have a contest on this site to see how many microprocessors can be used in a flashlight. It would have to start with a "battery time remaining" monitor, digital display of course...and it would always revert to displaying the time of day so you have to push a button to see how much battery time is left. Then it could store phone numbers and birthdays, be wi-fi connected and report your GPS position to the CIA continuously, have several modes of blinking and flashing, several colors of light, requiring only a menu driven selector that you can't see if you need a flashlight in the first place.

Any ideas?

Good point. Why build a flashlight with computers in it when you can build a computer with a flashlight in it?

 

I still can't figure out why there is a camera in my phone even though since I don't have a camera I use it all the time.
