That and many sites throttle their outputs to keep their overall transmission rate below their ceiling for all combined users so... Unless it's a dedicated point to point service you aren't getting what you paid for.

I have AT&T's 1Gb symmetrical offering. In general it does quite well.

Cloudflare offers a lot of free stuff, I'd encourage anyone to switch from their ISP's DNS servers to Cloudflare¹ for performance but even more, for privacy.

Another thing worth using is their speed test which is the most detailed and reliable I have found. Below are results for my connection. The first, will all the detail was done without Proton VPN² —which I use unless there is a reason not to. The second screenshot without the detail is with the VPN. The price is about 10Gbps, not a major cost.

For comparison, I also tried Ookla Speedtest with is below the Cloudflare results. I selected a server in NYC. I am peering through Chicago. The odd high speed upload is something I have seen before. If I add in the VPN I lose 200Mbps(!) on the upload and nothing on the download. I don't know why any of it is happening.

In any case, I am happy with the results. The AT&T service has been reasonably reliable. Only one outage in a year and it was short. The network rarely seems congested and I haven't spent much time wondering why things are slow.

I have CenturyLink ADSL+ here, over ordinary twisted pair. We've had this here in East Arizona for over a decade and its worked pretty well, we can watch movies online absolutely fine.

At best we get 10M down and 1M up, so if I need large downloads, updates to tools etc they can take sometime.

We occasionally get outages though, often when new customers are being added in the area, the line will sometimes "retrain" several times a day and useability becomes poor.

So I recently got TMobile 5G, I already had it but it was poor, unreliable and I stopped using it really. I complained recently and visited a store, the guy took my old modem and gave me the latest and its been flawless, huge difference.

We get good speeds: 400M down and like 40M up.

A couple years ago I dug into the ADSL and modem spec and was impressed by the sophistication of the whole design, very impressive, they way it adapts to changing levels of noise and so on.

I kept the Century Link as a backup, but I might soon cancel that service seeing how reliable TMobile has been.

 

My first "high speed internet" was dual channel ISDN, also known as "it still does nothing" by the gaming communities.

 

Who actually needs/uses 1Gb/s speeds?

I've also had T-Mobile for a couple years now, and it's been fine without any significant hitches.
More than sufficient speed for any of my needs.

I changed from Xfinity (Comcast) cable after they kept jacking up the price every year.
Of course, now I've noticed they've reduced their prices, apparently from the competition.

Not most people, but there are plenty of people that do. I have a friend that, at least internal to his home network, ran into bandwidth problems with 1 Gbps ethernet and so moved up to 10 Gbps. I know that he has at least a 1 Gbps Internet connection and was complaining about it being a bottleneck for him and was looking into moving up. Don't know if he found an adequate solution yet.

As people continue streaming higher and higher definition video or uploading/downloading larger and larger image and movie files, the needs will continue to grow, particularly for households with multiple streaming devices in use at the same time or multiple users transferring large files.

Then, of course, you have small businesses that share the connection among all of the employees. 1 Gbps becomes pretty tame pretty quick for a company with a couple dozen employees.

 

Depends on system conditions, times are dynamic on other traffic and users.

I can stream movies fine even with 10M ADSL, so what kind of streaming needs 10G? Do people actually buy copies of movies and store them locally? I use Amazon and Netflix and AppleTV to rent/buy movies and for memorable movies I buy the blu-ray.

May I ask what kind of data are you backing up? and what kind of volumes are those full/incs?

 

I have AT&T's 1Gb symmetrical offering. In general it does quite well.

This thread got me thinking so I went Gbs provider shopping... Only 1, our local independent Darien Telephone company. One of very few surviving independently owned and operated TELCOS left today. They do provide fiber to our house 4 miles from their operations building as well as some of the house on the coast of our county but not inland. Fiber right to the modem in our house. Which by their instruments from my home to their equipent does 1Gbs. but...

I somehow suspect that the lines they are leasing for internet access might not be the best but the cheapest they could find...
