My problem is similar, insofar as the board is drawing a lot of current, but different in that it doesn't appear to be working at all.
My first suspect was the 5V regulator, as my voltage was unstable. I've changed that, but the board is still not recognized by the PC and still showing blocks on the screen.
The board is showing 12 ohms between 5V and ground, but I'm stumped as to how to trace it.
Processor gets very hot.
