If you are uncertain about the use of capacitors then I think you're not quite ready to build guitar pedals.

Probably an axial lead package. My guess is that he is working with documentation of an old design, and the pc board (or perf-board) construction has a layout for axial lead caps.

I've seen a bit of this. Guitar people revere the old pedal designs, combing the innergoogle for germanium transistors and ancient opamps. uA709 or LM301, anyone?

I wouldn't recommend buying electronic components on Amazon. They might be okay, but you're more likely to get genuine components from an authorized reseller (Mouser, Newark, Jameco, DigiKey, etc).
