A motion detector pointed at my PC screen

Hi,

I want to create some kind of alert/buzzer/alarm that sounds when something on my screen starts moving at a rapid rate. Imagine looking from an overhead view at 10 squares that are moving along a straight track side by side - like looking at a dog race from overhead but the dogs are basic white squares and moving slowly in a straight like side by side (1mm a minute). I want the alarm to sound when one dog/square starts moving at a more rapid rate. It should sense any faster movement of the squares.

Is it possible to set this up with a camera and motion sensor? Is there anything in particular suited to detecting that kind of movement?

I hope someone can help.

Thanks

Inexpensive security camera systems incorporate this capability. The frame is divided into many sections, and motion within that section is detected while the other sections can be ignored. A threshold activity level (sensitivity) can be defined for each section.

It would need to detect any activity across all the screen (all the sections?). OK so maybe I will buy a security camera and play about with the sensitivity and see if it works.

Be sure to look for motion detection in the capabilities. I don't know the market but I suppose there are some that cannot do this. For what it's worth, I know this model does.

I just tried quite a few free iphone motion detectors but none of them work. The problem is that the squares are always moving along a straight track, 1mm every so often (so it is always detecting that motion). I want it to detect the motion when the square moves about 1cm/second. I tried with the sensitivity settings but that didn't work either.

Were you using the iPhone camera? Are you sure your mounting was not causing more noise than the 1mm movement? I would think it would be very difficult to eliminate vibrations to that level. Also, a monitor has a scan rate. Won't a motion detector always see it as a moving object?

The iphone was mounted and not moving. It is detecting the motion OK, it shows with a red box where and when there is movement, and it's all OK. The problem is that it is too sensitive. So I thought that maybe there was some application in electronics or something existing that is setup to detect a sideways speed or acceleration.

No clipping/audio level balancer,etc.. or other similar function in the software..
Seems funny..

Maybe time to find better software.. and probably easier/cheaper than having some vision system together..

It is audio software. Just to detect a rapid change in levels. It can't be done through the software.
Okay? And what exactly happens once the buzzer goes off? Do you need a audible alarm to tell you that your music got too loud? o_O

Why use a complex visual sensing method to do what a basic signal sensing or AGC (Automatic Gain Control) circuit could do or as others said why not use proper software instead?

What is the screen picture showing that cant be sensed via any number of other methods?

There seems to be a lot of other relevant information regarding the overall source of the problem and the ultimate wanted end result here than what's being presented.

No kidding. I haven't played with audio software for years but as far as I can recall even the most basic software from 15 - 20 years ago included all that and more.
