perhaps not right on fibre optics, but I was wondering if there is any sort of device which emitts light along its entire length. Something like a fibre optic, but which permits light to escape along its length.

Do you know of anything which is similar, but which can change its opaqueness?

 

Define opaqueness, intensity is adjustable, as is length (it can be cut to length). It is fundamentally plastic coated wire.

You could use plastic tubing filled with clear epoxy, but I'm not sure how well that would work.

 

Almost like 'smokieness'.

At one point is can be like clear fishing nylon, but then you can change it to a solid colour.
