I was replacing an old gfci outlet because the test button no longer worked. After I shut the circuit breaker off I checked for voltage on the line hot wire to neutral and got a reading of 6volts. Is this normal, common, or dangerous? The new gfci is working fine.

Your meter has a high impedance, 1M or 10M-ohm. It is possible that you are picking up stray radiation. Try putting a 1M-ohm resistor across the meter and see if the reading changes.
