Hey Guys
Can someone please recommend an alternative for this thyristor - 40tps12a Thyristor 55a.
I am doing a project from the evil genius book making a coil gun which shoots nails.
I am based in Cape Town, South Africa and my supplier doesnt have it. Does the 55a at the end of the name mean it can handle 55amps? I found a similar one
Vishay, VS-40TPS12A-M3, Thyristor, 1200V 35A, 40mA 3-Pin, TO-247AC
at rs electronics online but not sure if it can handle the current draw as it says 35a.
The project uses 4 9v batteries connected together in series I think to create a voltage of 36volts.
However its not a prolonged current draw so it may be ok. The batteries basically chgarge up caps and then its discharged through a coil wound around an old empty pen which shoots the nail.
I would post the project but I think it may be a copyrite issue.

The original is 35a continuous and 55 rms.
The sub should work.
