We do not want any circuits powered directly from the mains voltage.
Isolation is a must here.
It is for your and the others safety.
As shown the simple phone charger or any other power adapter will give you the provided isolation.

Besides...you can buy a 220 volt, neon bulb, mains indicator for about a dollar.
