Hi,

I'm after a 12VDC Regulator (circuit) which can output up to 2A, Vin 12-21VDC (or higher is ok). I'm looking for something that will generally be connected to a 12V Car battery but may also be connected to a 14.4 V Lipo or even direct to a 21V solar panel, to run relay drivers, microcontrolers and various small electronic projects.
Must be cheap and the fewer components the better.
I have considered the 7812 but the Vin is no good as if I connect to car battery which is not charging it would be under this chips min Vin of 14.5V.
Are there any other regulators or anything else that would work?

Thanks in advance.

Note that a linear regulator will dissipate up to (21V - 12V) * 2A = 18W which will require a healthy heat sink.
A switching regulator, such as suggested by dendad in post #2, will dissipate much less and won't require a heat sink.
