SgtWookie Joined Jul 17, 2007 22,230 Mar 24, 2009 #5 The PIC12HVx and PIC16HVx have built-in 5v regulators. It appears that only the PIC16HV540 is still in production. I would not be surprised if they had complaints from high failure rates due to having the heat from a 5v regulator on board.
