AVG and AVAST are the best. They have been around for quite a while. AVG has more use tools, uses less resources, and avast is generally simplier to use.

Right now I have AVG on windows 7.

As far as free anti virus is considered, the choices are AVG, Avast or Antivir. All 3 are good.
But a good firewall is necessary as bertus stated. I used AVG and Sygate Personal Firewall before I got Kaspersky PRO.

I use Spyware Doctor. It was recommended by Google and works great; I use the freeware version but I'm sure the $30 dollar one would be better.

you do know that sig based AV is really like 3rd world technology. sig based will miss morphic virii. i have a backdoor exe that symantec had sig'd for port 80 (the default port when this backdoor came out). all i had to do was hex eit the exe and change the port to something else, and symantec no longer identified it.

sig based AV will eventually go away. newer behavior based AV software will be required in order to stop malware. if the bad people want to get by your AV they can. today the bad folks really dont want the data on your machine. they target bigger and better systems but they may use yours to help them get the better stuff.

a combination and AV (avg, symantec, mcafee, etc etc) and AM (anti-malware) like SpySweeper gives you better defense.

and, never browse the internet as a admin user. many of the malware crud will exploit through the browser and will obtain current user privileges.

I use Avira on all the windows laptops in my house. Its light and does the job. My personal PC and eeepc run Linux so I don't have anything to worry about. But I maintain an alert overview because one day some smart arse will do something nasty!

AFAIK, Avast, AVG, and Avira are great choices. But I would vote Avast cause it is easy to use, and does not have conflict with my other applications.

I run the free version of Avast and the free version of Zone Alarm firewall. I also do weekly scans with malwarebytes.com (also free). I have a headcold today, but my computer never gets sick. What I like about Avast, besides the fact that it is the most effective anti-virus program I have ever used, is that you just install it, configure it for automatic updates, then forget it. It works seamlessly without bogging your system down as the other programs do. IMHO anyway.

I love Avira AnitVir because it makes system bleeps and popups when you get a virus, even when the file or whatever has not been activated.

For example i downloaded a file that had the file, the virus detector is so good that the moment the file was downloaded into the temp folder it found it and asked me what to do!!!

The reocmmendations for all the free AVs are provided in this thread and any new recommendations are either off-topic or repeating what has already been said, therefore I will now close this thread. If anyone has a specific questions they wish to ask please start a new thread. Thanks.
