My Yamaha AX 700u receiver produced a smell when I plugged in some old rca cables. I assume there was a short. Any ideas on how to start diagnosing this. Am new to this but would like to learn, and not have to throw out a great amp, or pay someone else to fix it.

Show us some closed-up pictures of the PCB.... Are there any burnt components? Like some bulging capacitors, darken resistors or blown fuses?

Do you have a schematic or service manual for your receiver? That would be a plus....

As far as I know, RCA cables carry no power, only signals. And shorting of signals cannot "fry" anything! - Unless, the other end of the RCA cable was connected to a "frying" supply.
