I need to have XY movement control (from computer) on roughy 3" by 4" space. The resolution of linear movement should be no less than 0.0005"-0.001". Can anyone suggest some sources/suppliers of such motion control systems?

One time thing for now. I am just trying to automate a task for a friend of mine. But he is trying to stay within $2-3K for all components.

I would think to use precision servo motors with appropriate gear ratios to move a belt or turn a fine thread screw with the device connected to it. just googled it and saw BALDOR Servo Motors. They have a customized input on their page.
