I'm just curious what an EE with a basic electronics desk would have tried in the same situation.
I would have challenged the student to figure it out for himself. He had a preconception that it should produce a lot of volts, and yet was faced with data saying it didn't. A tremendous learning opportunity for anyone, to reconcile preconceptions with reality. And if his expectation for volts was based on the nameplate of the motor-as-generator he was using, you'd immediately have your answer.My question is what would you have tried?

Thanks GopherT. (another board) actually brought up a very obvious point that I'd tried and forgotten about. But I can't mention it here and I'm done with forums for a bit.I think you will be best off taking this to another site like many have done here recently.
