Why Decimal System??

Inch / Foot (12 inches) / Yard (3 feet) / Pole (5.5 yards) / Chain (22 yards) / Furlong (220 yards, 10 chains, 40 poles) / Mile (1760 yards, 8 furlongs)
What base is that? Don’t knock it though, they were all based on practicalities; unlike the metric system which is arbitrary; like pounds per square inch and pascal which is downright dangerous when used to inflate automobile tyres.

Americans (US) seem to like dividing things in half...

Gallon/2 = 1/2 gallon (too easy)
(1/2 gallon)/2 = quart (quarter gallon)
quart/2 = pint
pint/2 = cup
cup/2 = gill
gill/2 = ?
gill/2/2=ounce
ounce/2=tablespoon
tablespoon/2/2 = dram

How many fingers (including the thumbs) do you have? Which came first, counting or computers?

John
I got ten fingers, but only got nine toes so I can do Base 10 on my fingers and base nine on my feet. I know I know, I just could not help mayself, just had a silly moment I couldnt control. Im back quite now.

In a manner of speaking, isn't 0/1/"off" base three?
Since computers rely on voltage levels to differentiate one state from another, you'd have to define 0 and 1 as voltage levels other than 0 volts.

So, for example, if you had 0 = 5v, 1 = 10v, off = 0v, then yes, you'd have a base 3 system. But that's really no different than a true base 3 system in which 0 would be defined as 0 volts and 1 & 2 would be defined at some other voltage levels; it would just be more confusing, since people tend to like equating 0 with 0 volts.

I think they intended to use a three phase AC, but since it was not a viable project, there is probably not much info to be found on it. I'm going from a very unreliable memory of this info. Never trust MY memory.

I only have 9 fingers, but my Dad counts in Octal...

If only early man evolved without the pinky finger we'd have base 2 licked. Computing would be way ahead of what it's at now.
If our feet were all a meter long...

No an actual meter, we'd either have really big feet or be a race of giants.

Geeze when will the US switch to metric? They use it in Star Trek so we know it'll happen sometime in the future. ;)

And here I thought we evolved from something without feet. If more got turned up for our feet, then we would have to be shorter, right?

Which metric system do you think we should be on? Last time I checked, there were 5 different metric standards for nuts and bolts, but only one SAE standard. My rulers have measured in tenths, hundredths, and thousandths for as long as I can remember.

BTW, I didn't know "warp" was a metric measure of speed? What exactly is warp 8?
