Basement panels are quite common around here, and up north (MA) where I used to live. Every house I have lived in, a unfinished basement = laundry room. I suppose that's to give you more liveable room upstairs.

There are a certain percentage of outdoor circuit breaker boxes in the county where I live. I guess about 5% to 10%. I also guess they were installed at least 40 years ago (because that's the age of the houses). Probably not legal anymore.

I don't know what the current codes say (and they vary a lot around the country/world), but the house I grew up in was built in 1971.

 

I imagine the amount of snow you get has a lot to do with it !?

My neighbor just had one installed, It's located outside and uses the original panel as a subpanel.They had it done to allow for central heat/air.

That's why people associate nerds and geeks with the basements))Because whenever they see them on the TV, they are always in the basement. Plus, as a nerd I hate being constantly interrupted and the basement is probably the only place where no one annoys you cause normal people hate basements)

At that house, I was a true 'Closet Case'.

I wish I had a ground floor studio/workshop, with a garage door. Lifting equipment on the 6th floor with a tiny elevator is becoming dull...
