Who are you?

Hey, Graduated in 2002 at Curtin Uni in Bentley, WA. Haven't used my Electrical/Electronic Eng Degree since due to the fact that LIFE beat me down. Trying to get back to my feet and re-learn everything and get a job in my field instead of wasting my life away doing Admin work.
(Not that there's anything wrong with that...)
:p

Hello to all.

I've registered on the site as a student. OK, a 70-year-old student but, hey, a hunger to learn staves off Alzheimers.

My goals are primarily to learn and understand. Beyond that, I'd like to create a circuit that illuminates a different bulb dependant upon polarity. If I ever succeed in that, I'd like to create a circuit that would illuminate a bulb when there is no power being applied to another circuit.

Sounds perverse now I have written it but basically I want to know when something is off. All low voltage, 12-15, and low amperage, 2 or 3 amps.

But, as I say, understanding diodes, rectifiers et al is the primary goal. I have initially downloaded the textbook PDFs so it's on to the Kindle with them and they are next in line once I've finished Lords of Discipline. Which I thoroughly recommend.

I'm a 1991 Electrical Engineering & Computer Science graduate, and I've spent most of my career in the software domain. I'm trying to refresh my EE/ECE skills. I'm just getting started, but this site looks very good so far!

Hi there, this is David. I am very happy to find this website. Hope to learn a lot electronics and do some useful projects.
I was so surprised all those valuable video tutorials.

Guys, is there any lab project related the tutorials?

I really want my hands get dirty. Where can I get electronic item for project, i.e. resisters, diodes or any things (electronic hardwares)

Your help will be appreciated.

Tnx,
David

Hi David.

Where can I get electronic item for project, i.e. resisters, diodes or any things
Besides a good book, for a hands-on I'd recommend to get a solderless breadboard, like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MB-102-830-...Arduino-New-/181805742542?hash=item2a547779ce

For a power supply, to power your breadboard, I'd recommend my own design here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Superior-so...A-USB-200mA-/191678768352?hash=item2ca0f1e4e0
It provides a bunch of voltages, it is pretty powerful for lab project - 1.5 Amp per breadboard rail, and it has protection against short circuit, i.e. if you accidentally short it, it won't burn ;)

For parts I'd recommend http://www.mouser.com/
look for a "through-hole" parts, solderless breadboard is well suited for them.

If you want to have "kits", like kits of resistors, capacitors etc, which will cover your needs for a while, Mouser may become expensive.
In that case I'd say, go to eBay. For example, this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/145-Values-...ssorted-Kit-/271149613814?hash=item3f21c6c2f6
For similar kit, albeit at better quality, you will shell well over $100 at Mouser.

Those above were resistor kits, for capacitor kits I'd recommend
http://www.ebay.com/itm/300Pcs-30-V...ent-Kit-New-/141663274573?hash=item20fbca064d
and
http://www.ebay.com/itm/15-value-12...Kit-Set-New-/131544080386?hash=item1ea0a36002

3 kits listed will cover you for quite a while.

Transistors and such depend on whatever experiment you will be doing, Mouser is good at that or you may look up on eBay.

If anything, just ask us here :)

To all the newcomers, it would be very helpful if you put your general location in your profile. City/State and country would be great, and including your timezone as well would be even better. It gives members here an idea of what kind of resources they can recommend, as some may be more available in your area than others.

Hi Guys I'm a total Newbie to electronic design. Kicking myself for not paying attention at school. Lessons learned too late.
building some machines and need add the electronics, so I am here to learn and be guided. hope thats OK.

Hi.
I'm from Italy and I'm 15.
I started to study electronics as an hobby recently, I've bought the book Make Electronics to do some experiments and I'm studying a bit of theory from this website (very good resource!).

P.s. Sorry if my english is not so good, I'm learning it at school.

Hi everyone,

I'm Mikko from Finland. By profession and training I'm a finance specialist (M. Sc. Econ.) but I'm very much interested in engineering and sciences. Home automation using Arduino and Pi is especially close to my heart. Hopefully I am able to find help and resources here to improve my understanding of circuits.
