I'm a senior software developer, (i.e. senior computer nerd) mostly C++ and Java. I've been programming professionally for about 23 years (since 1991). I've been working primarily in multi-threaded and network programming as well as database stuff. I've been primarily in the Windows realm, but I recently bought a Raspberry Pi to program in Java in the linux realm as well as to play with electronics, circuitry and programming it. Just for fun.

I'm here as a recovering stroke victim who has had a lot of memory loss & I've become a bit dyslexic as well.

I've had a big problem here in the UK where we have 240 volts per phase . Recently when there was a problem with the electricity supply company when their underground cable 400 mts away developed a fault over several days , in the end the on off continuity neutral side of the cable caused over voltages of about 480 volts +/- 8% . before finally blowing and blacking out 20000 homes . Once a big stand by genny was put on line we got power back till the fault was repaired and the genny taken off line . At some time over the four days before the fault was repaired we lost most of the 12 volt 10 or 20 watt incandescent light bulbs in the lounge lights , the electric oven controls burnt out . The underfloor heating in the wet room burnt out along with the electronic control unit. Finally the battery charging side of the UPS unit burnt out . This is going to cost several thousand pounds to rectify as the whole slip resist floor of the wet room has to be removed a new trace heat mat system laid then re tiled and grouted up plus the oven , the UPS & floor timer / thermostat control unit .

I'm going to read quite a few threads over the next few days . some of the electrical knowledge I used to have has started to resurface ( City & Guilds industrial electronic test & service engineer , City & Guilds electrical & mechanical engineer and about 18 months of of the HNC electrical engineer study .
I just want to re-immerse my self in the terms & situations about three phase center tapped generation where the neutrap is taken from the centre tap and sometimes at other points along the cable route from the ground in the earth .

Then once I have it straight in my head get back to the Distribution Network Owners with a step by step run through of events and consequences 9 the forensics of the problem 0 ) so I can invite them to compensate /put right the damage for me

So I suppose a thread title of, " Three phase 240 volts star wound generation " might be a good thread title in a few days time .

Hi, I'm training to become a Aviation Maintenance Technician and I am looking to specialize in Avionics.

I came here for supplemental resources to aid me in understanding electricity.

Hi,
My name is Rob, I am an ex-electrical apprentice (typically I forget the ex part!), I took my apprenticeship at CCFE, which is a research centre which was a 4 year course, I have been an Ex apprentice about a year now and they are funding my degree in electronic engineering. I am currently in my 3rd year of uni - which equates to a 2 year part-time; 1 day a week. This is my first year at an actual uni and its quite tough (especially with working the other 4 days). Typically my electronics leans towards an artistic end, as I like to model and sculpt, so working on a few LED projects.

I am here to hopefully help consolidate my knowledge and to gain assistance in understanding some of my uni work.

Hi, my name is Dan Gartman. I am a lifelong tinkerer. I've worked in both electronics sales and at a contract manufacturing company building industrial electronics for companies such as FLIR and Audio Precision. I have a decent amount of experience in assembly and soldering, but very little knowledge of circuit design. I'm here to learn more about how to build, design and troubleshoot electronic circuitry. I appreciate the knowledge in this forum and all of the experience I will most likely gain from participating here. I consider myself a bit of an inventor, but lack the skills to build some of my ideas. I'm excited to learn what I need to know to build these ideas.

Hi, I am an electronics technician with a background as a technician in electrical power generation, welding equipment, and mining equipment (chemical analysis). I had thoughts of giving up my trade when I became unemployed and completed a BBus (property) degree, but was lured back into electronics to do QC, repairs and production work. I repair, modify and upgrade items I own, which brought me to this forum to gain knowledge on subjects for which I need additional information.

Hello
I'm Bachir, I'm computer engineer and I work as automation manager in dairy. I want to share my knowledge with people around the world and
and develop my English at the same time.
I remercis the administrator of this forum and all members
Best regards.

Dan there are some interesting MOOC's available on the internet both in theory and the actual building blocks that most circuits are made of .

I am a student earning an Associates in Biomedical Electronics. Since most job ads I see want a person to troubleshoot to the component level, I figured I needed to go beyond what I'm getting in school. When I went back to school, I had no knowledge of electronics or electricity whatsoever. So it has been an uphill battle. I hope to glean something from all you smart people!
