Hi everyone. I've had some trouble getting "verified" for about a year, I believe. Just recently acquired an interest in electronics. I've been through a good deal of the eBooks on the site and read a lot of the forum, but haven't been able to post. This is my first attempt. Thanks to Bill Marsden, I am now verified and able to post. Looking forward to being a part of the group.

Thanks for the welcome!

I've had a mania for name-puns as long as I can remember. Did you ever listen to Car Talk on NPR? Those guys were nuts for that sort of thing.
Old enough to remember all the unpublished books?
Could deserve it's own thread.:D

It's how I make a living. :D I have to say that I'm pretty partial to it. It gives me the freedom to learn electronics, play with woodworking and so on. Going to these mondo dive trips are the icing on the cake.

@ NetDoc ,have you heard of International Hall Of Fame ,they run free diving events

from there. They have some local and Miami free diving clubs. Do you offer any free

diving events ,sign up and go for times. My best time 4 minutes 28 seconds. I'm at

home in the water ,check out my picture on my profile page.

There are all sorts of dives being planned on ScubaBoard. Some have a cost associated with them while many do not. It depends on where the particular dive is happening. These dives are not restricted to just the Key Largo area, where I live or even the USA. With 239,000+ registered users, ScubaBoard is international in scope. From newbies to the guys redefining the boundaries of Scuba, we embrace the entire Scuba Community.

You must have read something wrong. Right now, we have 231,775 registered users.

But NetDoc's forum has A LOT more concurrent and regular userbase, judging from the traffic.

Every community is different. Every community has it's own appeal and flavor. Alexa.com is a good source to compare relative popularity of a site. ScubaBoard is rated 36,362 and allaboutcircuits.com is rated 29,151, which means you're more popular worldwide. Good job. However, looking at the American statistics, I rank 11,635, which is very strong and this site ranks 24,782 which is still very respectable. Most of my advertisers are US based, and I have an ad manager and a few sales people who make money by making me money.

Let's put this in perspective. There are over 10 million internet sites. Very few will ever, ever hope to pass the 100,000 ranking mark. Many successful businesses never get below 500,000. Under a 100,000 every 10,000 points is substantially harder to achieve. Think of it as an asymptote on curve. There are only two Scuba businesses to get below 50,000 and I am glad to be one of them.

Also, while there are a great many more electronics hobbyists than there are Scuba Divers, we are still considered a sport. Not only are we a sport, but we have to travel a lot to carry out our sport. Ergo, there's a lot of posting about where to go, what happens while you are there and so on. Me? I don't see the need to view the rankings as some kind of competition. It is what it is and isn't what it isn't. There will always be some overlap as I try and cobble together sensors for my Scuba Diving habit here and sometimes we even discuss electronics on ScubaBoard. It's all good.

Bottom of the frontpage, "All About Circuits Forum Statistics".

What you see in your photo is the number of users with at least one post.

There are many, many more lurkers than there are posters. Just like there are many, many, more people who read the paper than who write letters to the editor. That's true for all forums.

I have lurked here for Years. Never posted. Just watched. My 6 post count and all :D. Proud of low post counts....I am still deciding what to do.

Got to get the "feel of a Forum". Either it suits you or not. Easy really.

Forum statistics can be misleading. For instance, the total at the bottom of the first page may or may not be reset when they cull the membership ... like those who have been inactive for a very long time.

The community (membership) listing, is those not culled from the rolls. That is about 38k+.

This does not mean there is no growth, with membership or postings. There is decent growth from my observations over the last five months.

One thing that is common, at least with two forums that I've observed, is the transient nature of the members ... joining ... leaving ... and some hanging around. To look at those metrics, I characterized 91 days worth of members.

I would suspect NetDoc's forum to fall along similar lines. A lot of forums don't show their membership, so it becomes difficult to look at more than a few that do.

Some members lose interest quickly. A small percentage hangs around for whatever reason that makes them like the forum.

Hopefully this forum allows the membership roll to remain open. I will be revisiting the 91 day sample again in Nov.

Using the Alexa stats is a good metric on the various websites. As expected Google has the number 1 spot, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. When you think of the number of sites worldwide, any number less than one million means your in the top ten.

The "lifecycle" of the membership is similar .... when I juxtaposed a large forum against a small forum.
