The keyed center cylinder is too big for a standard octal socket. Seems like I saw the spring-bladed inserts in the pins before...but can't remember where.

It's quite similar to Octal Socket, however, they do not have the spring-bladed inserts in the pins.

Any other possibility?

 

I agree with Max as to octal base using 4 pins (pins 2, 4, 6 and 8). The spring loaded pins just ensure good pin contact. I also believe the pictured component is a form of explosive gas detector. Detectors like this often use a heater element or filament where low pin contact resistance is important. Anyway, that's my guess and I am sticking to it.

I tried finding the company online but it seems they are no more in operation.
