Most IoT, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RFID devices work at several GHz so these techniques are a lot more common today. At these frequencies traditional PCB separate LCR components and traces fail ( At these lower frequencies components behave closer to their ideal characteristics and parasitic effects aren’t as dominate, or not even present at all) to work using regular circuit theory models because we no longer can depend on instantaneous signal transfer assumptions. Every trace and the space between them is an electromagnetic signal modifier. At less that several GHz these effects still happen with fast digital signals. When we group signals with grounds and differential signal pairs, think about transmission line impedance with series damping resistors, and use other signal integrity measures we are compensating for and/or using distributed element circuit effects.
