I can't find any specifications or actual explanation of what it is.

 

 

It looks like a connector with magnets to hold the cable to the panel. Much like the Apple magnetic power supply connector. Rather than tripping over the cable, the cable just lets go so you don't pull the computer off the desk or damage the cable.

 

Ahh OK I thought it was some kind of inductive based charging gizmo!
