What electrical component would I use to keep the the current from turning on a light when the thermostat is on. I only want it on when I turn the override switch to the on position. If the switch is off and the thermostat is activated the override light is also turned on. I know this is a easy solution but my electronics are rusty and my books are packed somewhere in my basement. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Then a diode won't work.
The easiest solution is probably to use a double-pole switch with one pole connected only to light the bulb.
If you have to stay with that SP switch then you could use that to power a DP 120VAC relay.
