Its easy to stand on the sideline and criticise....................how about you post the schematic?
someone missed the point. there are sections in forum and - this one is about automotive circuits.
is it that hard to choose where to post? i prefer when things are organized and was hoping moderators would move it.

about ECU, no, i don't have any info on VW or oversea products. through my previous work i did gather plenty of proprietary data on various products from other brands:
connection diagrams, trouble codes, interfaces, lots of source code to communicate and test them etc.
it was part of job while working for previous company, but, it is a moot point, i cannot share anything (had to sign NDA and don't wish lawyers on my back).

I originally had a similar opinion. But, upon review of the Automotive sub-forum's subheading:

Installing a flux capacitor into your DeLorean? This is the place for assistance.

it seems that more than just circuit-talk is encouraged. We are not limited to discussions of how to build a control circuit for our flux capacitors, we are encouraged to discuss about mundane things like the installation of a simple store bought, ready-to-use flux capacitor (not even a mention if the flux capacitor needs any electronics at all). If discussions of Flux capacitor installation is allowed, if assume we can also discuss the merits of various brands of flux capacitors. Even discuss the morals and sustainability of the business models of various suppliers of flux capacitors.

In summary, I realize that our Cumpulsive behaviors should not be pandered to by other members.

I thought this thread was about how the cheat device or such worked. Guess not being my info on how to cheat an emissions compliant vehicles system to get better fuel economy and power got pulled a number of days ago.

Not sure what this thread is about now.

The actual 'cheat' looks to be easy, hiding it looks to be the tricky part. I'm trying to find the details at the embedded level of what was done. So far there is nothing public to talk about.

Computer-security experts believe that intelligence agencies have been doing this sort of thing for years, both with the consent of the software developers and surreptitiously.

This problem won't be solved through computer security as we normally think of it. Conventional computer security is designed to prevent outside hackers from breaking into your computers and networks. The car analog would be security software that prevented an owner from tweaking his own engine to run faster but in the process emit more pollutants. What we need to contend with is a very different threat: malfeasance programmed in at the design stage.

RAM and HDD size is a well known long established con.

A little sleight of hand with the difference between base 10 1000 and the base 2 1024.

no sweat, i guess i am getting old and grumpy :(
I had that on Tuesday. I fixed my air conditioner yesterday, so now I feel better.
Nasty job with an oxy-acetylene torch in a Heat Index of 105 F! :(
Just the amount of, "happy that is finished" is enough to cure my, "grumpy" for a while.:)

WASHINGTON -- Volkswagen of America has withdrawn its application for EPA certification for 2016 models with 2.0-liter diesel engines until they comply with U.S. emissions standards.

Without EPA certification, the cars and light trucks can’t be sold, which likely means there will be a longer-than-expected wait for the diesel models.

It is not clear exactly what role Bosch played, how closely it worked with Volkswagen to modify the engine management software, and how much it knew about Volkswagen's intentions to use software in order to cheat on emissions standards.

Bosch declined to comment on the questions, saying its business relationships with customers were confidential and it could not divulge details.

"This was not a corporate decision. To my best knowledge today, this was a couple of software engineers who put this in for whatever reason," said Michael Horn in response to questions from Rep. Joe Barton during a Congressional committee on the scandal.

Barton expressed disbelief with Horn's answer, saying he couldn't believe that no one in management was aware of such an important decision considering "how well run as VW has always been."

"I agree, it's very hard to believe," Horn said.
...
Rep. Jan Schakowsky, an Illinois Democrat, said that Volkswagen should buy back the diesel cars at the original purchase price. "If they want it, every VW clean diesel owner should be able to get their money back," she said. Horn said the company is looking at how to compensate owners but that its plans are to fix the cars, not repurchase them.

Schakowsky said assurances from the company that the cars will eventually be fixed, perhaps by the end of next year, are not enough.

"Volkswagen's word isn't worth a dime," she said. "To find a company that deliberately cheated asking customers for patience, is not acceptable."

Following Schakowsky's criticism of VW, Rep. Chris Collins, a New York Republican, echoed her remarks.

"VW is trying to get the United States of America to believe this is the work of a couple of rogue engineers," he said, "and I categorically reject that."
I agree, it's very hard to believe.
