VFD's generally use Dynamic braking via a resistor, internal or external.
Google Dynamic and regenerative braking should bring you plenty of explanations.
Are you looking at one specific model?

Dynamic braking refers to the dissipation of kinetic (and possible potential energy in the form of electric current) in a resistor. Regenerative braking pumps the current into the source of power either the DC link or possibly the building power supply. Elevators are a prime example of regenerative braking.
