I haven't done much research on this beauty yet, but for ten bucks, I couldn't pass it up!

I'm pretty sure this is a variac, but a quick search for "UTC 66501" didn't turn anything up, except that U.T.C. is the Universal Transfomer Company. Is anybody familiar with this series of transformers, specifically voltage and current ratings? And the connections.

 

UTC is United Transformer Corporation, and their name for these adjustable power transformers is "Varitran". I have never seen one in person, well at least in my last 50 years of flea market attendance.

 

Varitran was the key word I needed. I'll have to check the weight, but this is a heavy sucker. I suspect it's the guts of the V-3 7 amp Varitran.

It will be a handy unit mounted in a case with a digital volt/amp power meter.
