I am sorry I need to ask a basic question. How can I use optocoupler in circuit to display status signals 0 and -5 V on the LEDs. I have +/- 5 V voltage available along with Gnd. The status signals toggle between 0 and -5V every second or every five second.

Opto Anode to 0V and the Cathode to the switching -5V via a limiting resistor.

if the point is to drive an LED and voltage is some 5V, why bother with optocoupler at all?

Do you need the isolation in the optocoupler? I think not.
This might be the inverse of what you want.
