When I was 12-13......I was out squirrel hunting in my favorite hollow. It was also the first day of deer season....bucks only.
I heard of couple of rifle shots......and heard something running down the hill behind and towards me.....I froze and did not move. A large doe came beside me.......and using her front hoofs.....quickly dug a hole under a rhododendron........and crouched down it it.
All you could see was her head....and you had to look for it.
A few minutes later......here come a city slicker looking for that big buck he shot at.....wanted to know if I had seen anything. Damn doe couldn't have been more than 15 feet away.
I told him I had heard some shots....but didn't see anything. He left....and about 15 minutes later.......the doe got up and left without even a thank you.
After that...I never hunted deer.......but did hunt elk out west.
