Really, a "Turret" is a machine gun installation on a support arrangement called a turret. So it is actually the support, not the gun itself. A fact ignored by many, probably those who also call it a "Turrent".
And probably also illiterate slang for something totally not normally called by that name.
Probably part of the local dialect at "Meadow Bridge High School", wherever that is.

The use of turret for a gun mount is certainly derived from its original meaning:

a small tower on top of a larger tower or at the corner of a building or wall, typically of a castle.
