What function did they perform?

 

They are unused Motorola parts with very strange adhesive mounting pads? Need to find a Motorola parts list online. Google for one... Transistor? Regulator? Can't tell without the Motorola manual. There is a 3 pin IRFHM8329 30V Single N-Channel HEXFET Power MOSFET from International Rectifier but it is in an 8 pin SMD package.

 

Its an obsolete Motorola part from 1983. It doesn't appear, as far as I can see, in either their 1985 or 1988 catalogs. The 500N30 suggests a 500V 30A device, but this isn't the usual numbering scheme, which further suggests these are specials, maybe test samples created for a specific customer. The pads could be part of that
