On this subject, I had a friend, a retired American living and working as an actor in Bangkok who used to carry cat food around in his pockets. When he ran across a cat he would pet it and feed it. They would not let him keep a cat in his condominium and he considered this the next best thing.

As a teenager I kept racing pigeons, this was also a time when many neighbors kept chickens at the bottom of their gardens.
My pigeon coop was between them.
I would let the birds out for their daily exercise, where the flock would usually circle and start off with a fly-by at about 60 miles/hr.
I used to get an occasional kick to see the effect on the odd neighboring Rhode Island Red.
Sort off, Hey I have the equipment, I should be able to fly.
So there was a furious flapping of wings and one foot would come off the ground leaving the other on tip toe, after lifting the second foot, only to drop to the ground, it was like, to hell with it and where was that worm?

Creepy, reminds me of the ravens in Lord of the Rings, eventually they could be used as scouts or worse, weapons.

The author in the link is mixing the wild pigeon with the domestic variety, which as has also happened in the case of dogs etc, where selective breeding has occurred over centuries, and produced something that not only does not exist in the wild but is not used to living feral, although, in the case of pigeons, if not fed or given the right treatment will go feral and often do well, especially in the urban environment.
A couple of us captured a couple of racing pigeons that had turned 'wild' for some reason.
We were unsuccessful at re-establishing them into a 'tame' environment.
Very often the cause of non returning pigeons is a poor base environment, feeding etc.
