The penny is an outdated coin in the US. The US gave up the half-penny coin in the 1800's. If there were any logic to the Government Accountability Office's report, and the same threshold was used to banish the half-penny, the 10-cent piece (dime) would be at risk of becoming obsolete (after adjusting for inflation, usage, cost of production and the public's perception of the coin). Essentially asking, would you pick one up if you saw one on the sidewalk. Therefore, the nickel and penny should definitely be obsolete. The major lobbying effort to keep these coins in circulation is the nickel and copper manufacturers associations.

Many McDonalds and Starbucks are instructing their employees to round to the nearest 10-cent or 25-cent (in the customer's favor) when the store is busy and the cashier runs out of pennies, nickels or dimes. It is more valuable to the store to keep traffic moving and product going out the door than worrying about the 12 cents average per customer loss in change.

I don't see a need to be polite about calling the regular denizens of this website, "educated and skilled", though I do believe that defines a minority within the American population.
In your case, it might be an insult, but you're one of the thickest skinned people I can remember.
Either man up or go running amok and pillaging.

I did that two days ago. I saw a dime in a gravel driveway and picked it up.
Seemingly like tcmtech, I have always picked up things I saw on the ground. My earliest collection was bits of wire the telephone line man dropped in the alley. I didn't know what I would ever do with them, but they were shiny. To this very day, I have one of my 60 drawer plastic Walmart cabinets filled with all sorts of random bits from Allen head set screws to zerk fittings. I always pack that cabinet when I go to work and say, "Sixty drawers have saved a hundred jobs." Wire nuts, o-rings, Tapcons, every kind of screw (flat head, pan head, trumpet head, hex head...) finishing nails, Tinnerman clips...you name it, I probably have some.

This might be baggage from my childhood where I was raised in a place that had rocks, sticks, and mud. End of list.
Now I have a lifetime of bits and bobs from every kind of work a handyman might do.

 

Here's my MO on the penny bowl. I never put anything in it and I never take anything out of it...unless I spot a copper penny in the bowl, in which case I put a zinc penny in and take the copper penny out.

 

I thought cash was becoming obsolete anyway, for 99.9% of my daily transactions I use a debit card.

Ban the penny, nickel and quarters. Just need dimes, half dollars and dollar coins. Since 1857 the penny has been the smallest denomination minted. It is worth 2.8% of what it was worth back then. Making the dime the smallest denomination, it is still worth less than a third of the of the civil war era penny.

This might be baggage from my childhood where I was raised in a place that had rocks, sticks, and mud. End of list.

You lucky basstyard, I had to go find rocks (nearest ones were miles away too) and bring them home then squeeze the water out of em to make mud. And sticks? Whoo hoo for you. I had a single blade of grass to play with for my first 20 years of life.

But I like the idea. Silver solder comes in flat sticks, and it's strong to the edge of being brittle.
You can't really bend a sharp turn in it, but I can melt it. After all, it is a form of solder.
If that doesn't work, I can make a lock pick tensioner by grinding down an Allen wrench.
I bet a dental pick makes a nice stroker.
