The vet we used to use told us about a customer she had a few years earlier in which the husband brought their pit bull mix in to have the tail cropped. Upon finding out how much the surgery cost, he thought better of it. A couple weeks later the wife brought the dog in with a tourniquet on what was left of its tail. The husband decided that he could simply chop the dog's tail off with a hatchet. The wife asked if she needed to stay or if she could leave and come back, because her husband was out in the car and she really needed to take him to the emergency room to get the rather nasty dog bites on his arm looked at. At least she had her priorities straight.
