Hello, I am new to designing my own circuit, but I am struggling with how to integrate a reed switch into a battery-pack-powered LED strip light system. The basic idea is to have a magnet trigger a reed switch, which will then activate the lights. My two areas of struggle are trying to do a DC-DC step down, so I don't fry the reed switch, and how I connect a reed switch to a 12V 1-channel relay, so it will switch the higher voltage system. My current thought is to use a buck converter and a few resistors on a small PCB board, but after that, I am stuck. I just can not seem to wrap my head around what wire needs no go where and how to make the reed circuit isolated from the light circuit, but still use the same battery pack. If I could get some advice, even if it is just some resources to study or such, it would be greatly appreciated.

By using the reed switch at 5V to energize the base of a logic level 2N7000 FET transistor switch. Low 5V system energizing a higher voltage system via a switching transistor. Very common method. Check the 2N7000 PDF.

Post a schematic or block diagram of your circuit, showing voltages and currents.

if i understand, you want to use reed switch to toggle power to LED lamp that is powered by 12V battery?
battery powered circuit should be efficient with energy so why not use MOSFET instead of relay?

and if you insist on relay, post datasheets for both relay and reed-switch. because i use reed switches for years and powering relay is not an issue.

still, i would rather use mosfet:
