Static application using a negative ion generator

Has anyone tried this? I am a wargamer and love the fact that one can use static grass to make a model or display more realistic. The retail static grass applicator or "Flockbox" can retail for upwards of $150. There are ways around this. DIY projects using the electrical innards of a 3v hand-held bug zapper being one example. The other DIY is incorporating a negative ion generator as a reliable 12vdc power source. I chose the latter and I am having problems with it. I have fried 2 12v adapters trying to get it right. Help!

I forgot to mention, I am using general purpose 18 guage wire from lowes, a 3 pole rocker switch from lowes, and a 12v power adaptor. The generator has a single black, fatter wire on one end and 2 thinner red and black wires on the other.

Not enough information... No model numbers on the ion generator..
No schematic..
No description of really what you are trying to do.. what you have tried.. what you think is supposed to happen,etc...

People who make scale models use a modelling material called "static grass". It is small filaments ranging from 2mm to 10mm in length and beyond, and as the name implies, it is charged with static electricity very easily. It comes in a wide variety of colors. In order to apply the SG, one must use a "static grass applicator". These redily available, yet expensive tools consist of a hollow plastic handle, a hopper of some sort to place the static grass in, and a metal screen retrofitted to the hopper. The generator is attached via 18 guage wires to the hopper screen. When a button is pushed on the handle, the NIGen sends current to the screen thereby electrifying it. When the grass is applied, it passes through this charged screen and also becomes charged. Think of it like a huge oblong salt shaker, with the salt being static grass. When the charged grass is shaken on to a previously white glued surface, it stands straight up. More later!
