Small Project as a Gift

Hello everyone,

My friends are going to graduate soon. So I decided to make small gifts for them. The design consists of 30 LEDs (, or a tape of LEDs should work too). I want it to work like this:
All LEDs are off >> LED 1 is ON >> LED 2 and the previous one are ON >> LED3 and the previous ones are ON >> ... >> All LEDs are ON for 5 seconds >> All LEDs are off >> and so forth.

Do you have any suggestion about any good ICs for the job?

Thank You

Power available ? LED color ?
Almost same project down this page to LED Scroll light help, by Nabeel H, drawing post #13. Just add 2 more SRs.

I want to use this led tape in the link. I will cut it into sections and arrange those into my friends' names, and apply the control algorithm to each section like I said before. My power limitation should be 10W. Also, is there any light weight 12V batteries to power this led tape? I want this gift to be around the same size as a hand and light in weight.

If using HD tape letters will be about 3" X 5" / letter.
Have you considered LED 7 seg. displays ? A 1" letter, red on black about US $ 1.55
Does a whole letter come on or individual segments ?
If using individual LEDs, might be about 15 LEDs / letter & 6 letters / name, or 90 LEDs / name.

14-segment displays make far better alphabetic characters than 7-segment displays do.

You could just purchase programmable scrolling led name badges. They're available from ebay and others.

I prefer a whole letter coming out at a time. Guess it's easier. Thank you very much :)

Letters do not work well with 7 seg. displays, might use a matrix like 5 X 7 or alphanumeric display as in post
# 5.
