The silica gel is used to keep the parts dry, as silica gel will absorb the water.

You can buy 2lb bags of it from hardware stores used as a de-humidifier for rooms etc, one trade name is Dryit.

Isn't the stuff for basements calcium chloride? Silica gel is commonly know as a desiccant and works best in a confined space.

 

ICs are shipped to me from the supplier in sealed anti-static bags with huge packets of silica gel and a moisture indicator card. When I partially use the allotted supply, I reseal the bags with the silica gel still in the bag.

High humidity is a top cause of component damage in storage.

When silica gel has absorbed moisture from the air it no longer can serve its purpose as an effective desiccant. You can rejuvenate silica gel by putting it in a warm oven for a couple of hours.
