Should I dare or Not?

What makes you think like that? Maybe because I am a little bit too open in my conversations? even on silly things??? That's human nature I can say. As long as I am not hurting anyone I believe I can proceed in my way of living.

I got a soldering iron at like 15 or 16 and just did it, sure my first attempts were no doubt sad, but one improves quite quickly, by the time I got to electronics college I was an excellent solderer and sailed through those lessons.

I recently did some electronics soldering (boards, components) and my biggest issue was my eyesight, I haven't done that kind of soldering in like forty years!

Have lost some money hoping the people in my town would teach me electronics, especially to get on soldering. But no one did. Should I dare? To explore and try soldering on my own...
Get a batch of stripboard and a batch of TTL/CMOS DIL ICs. Then place a few on the board and solder each pin. That is something you should be able to do after a few weeks or months. The boards are to be thrown away, this is the best practice lots of soldering but no actual circuit being built.

Just solder a chip in and then examine it under a magnifier or something, look at each joint, is there too little solder? are any joints dry joints? are any of them big blobs? are any of the pins shorted by blobs of solder?

Once you see the errors you'll have something to aim for.

Electronics is an art which is mostly learnt by doing, and not just reading or studying. Take the leap, most of the time errors are not costly and the learning experience is very much worth the effort and risk.

Here's my recent effort using throw away board and chips:

It's poor, only the 3rd and 4th (and possibly 1st and 2nd) joints on the bottom row are acceptable. As I said I was surprised at how bad it turned out, years ago every pin would be very neatly done, my eyesight was my biggest problem.

Got me thinking. I've reviewed many of your earlier posts (Shafty's posts). Just about everything had to do with programming or other plug and play things. However, I do wonder why back in April 2024 you bought an iron but as yet have not tried soldering with it.

It seems like the problem is more than just eyesight. There's mostly too much or too little solder and it's not being applied in the right place. Possibly, the tip isn't being positioned correctly; or it's the wrong size/style.

Get yourself some magnifiers. I use these for precision work:

Or these clip-ons for my glasses:

I also have several of these:

And one of these (without the iron holder):

Good question. I bought that with so many enthusiasm when that paid trainer said me to buy one. But you know what is the first soldering task he given to me? A perfect straight line of solder. Later only I came to know that's the same day I paid my whole fee on that day (I paid in 2 installments). He just wanted to get rid of me. I neither asked my money back nor demanded him for a training because I wanted him to teach from the bottom of his heart. I should have filed a petty case on him. Sadly Still I haven't found a good teacher in this subject.

I read, write, blog, eat, work all by sitting on the floor only. A work table would be convenient but has to be bigger in size otherwise floor would be always much convenient.
