How do you calculate the equivalent series resistance of an inductor?
I know that it is just a wire and that you could calculate the resistance using the crosssectional area, length and resistivity of the wire. But shouldn't the fact that we are turning the wire have an effect on the formula?

Coiling the wire has no effect on the resistance of the wire.

just measure the resistance with an ohmmeter. resistance in an inductor has an effect on the Q or quality factor of the coil, and losses.

 

For SMPS use I run DC through it at roughly the same amount of current it will get when in use.

Then after it warms up measure the dropped volts, and get the effective operating R from R=E/I.
