series battery question

I presently have a 20 year old piece of equipment that runs 24vdc & 12vdc motors. It uses ice-cube relays with 12v coils to control one big 24 vdc motor and various 12 vdc motors. The unit is parked on a platform when not in use with a trickle charge hookup for it's 2-12 volt 20AH batteries hooked in series for the 24v motor with a tap in between for it's 12 volt end. Unfortunately, it's charging system was incorporated into a terribly over-engineered circuit board that now must be replaced. Any suggestions on separating it & installing a more user-friendly and maintenance free system? The whole board and it's processors (12) have been replaced by a series of cubes and a little ingenuity. Thanks

And what exactly do they do? If they control the charging correctly then I'm unclear why you need to replace them .
