Hi Everyone
I'm new here, and hoping I have posted this in the right place! I am wondering if I could get some advice for a complete novice when it comes to troubleshooting. I can do basic things like use a multimeter, change components and I am at a good level with soldering. However I have been pouring over this board now and it's really irritating me! The board is for a rechargeable battery pack for a Sega GameGear (GG). It won't power a GameGear as the voltage when under load drops from 7.5v to around 2-3v.
Power is always present at the connector (that's correct apparently according to some research I did). When charging you switch the unit to ON which activates the charging circuit. The switch is not used for any other purpose it just turns on the charging. The Orange LED comes on, and after around 6 hours of charging, I disconnected it and tried it in the Gamegear - but nothing. Incidentally, the orange LED had not gone out, but the battery was warm and when measured was coming in at around 8v.
Some notes -
1. I am charging with an official Sega power adaptor that works fine (can power up a GG no problem)
2. Three caps have been changed. Standard practice for me on this type of old board. I just do it! They are correct V and uF and inserted the right way.
3. I tested the voltage at the output lead (blue and yellow wires) and when it's not under load (so not connected to the GG) it measurers 7.5v-7.8v
4. As soon as the GG is connected to the pack, the voltage drops to anywhere between 1.5v - 2.5v, again, measured at the output solder points. Remove the lead from the GG and the voltage jumps back up to 7.8v
5. The fuse is good.
6. I have tested and inspected tracks, I cannot see any breaks or corrosion.
One thing I did noticed is that the component at C6 looks a little brown on top almost looks a tiny bit melted?
So, this is far as I can go. If anyone can help with next steps, I would be eternally grateful!
Thankyou!
J
