The light of autumn may well be the most beautiful of the year for photography. The rich color palette and lower angle sunlight are very different from other times.

In fact, fall might just be my favorite season if not for it being a signal that the desolation of winter is coming. For those who know what I mean, you are not alone.

SAD can make the end of summer through the clear signs of spring a dreadful time. It's not just a preference, but can be a devastating blow to peace of mind. It can seem like the world is ending—but cold comfort though it may be, remember that it's not. Depression, in its various forms, is as real as any other disorder of our bodies. You can't "just snap out of" a cold, or a stomach virus, and depression isn't a choice any more than they are.

The mind-body interaction means that while you can't snap out of it, cognitive orientation can help, even to the point of letting you climb out of the pit that those around you might be telling you is just a little dip in the terrain. It's not an elevator but it might be a rope and grappling hook that can help keep you from descending. So, It might help, however little, to keep in mind that just as fall is a portent of winter, winter, in turn augurs spring. And however it feels, we know that every year the world persists and the death of winter becomes green and all the other colors of life.

So, anyone who needs it, I am here pulling for you. I know how deep the depths can be. You can't just "snap out of it", it's not just a preference, it's an emotional steam roller. Chin up, friend—winter is coming but that means spring is only a few months away!
