We were in Rome on New Year’s eve 2024. We attended mass on January first at Saint Peter’s basilica. We were supposed to be seated really back, but in the immense crowd’s movements and a lucky strike, we were pulled to a location less than 20 feet from the Pope. He looked extremely frail and was brought in on a wheelchair. He was so weak that another Cardinal presided over the mass, while Francis sat on the side.
The “word on the street” back then was that he was extremely ill and would not make it through 2024.
The miracle of human survival is that we often get stronger near death, if the reason for living just a little longer is more meaningful to us than the life we know is coming quickly to an end.
"No one who wants to be Pope should be elected Pope"
- Pope Francis ...
Imagine if an ordinary politician were to make a similar declaration .... He clearly understood that his position was one of service, quite literally, both in truth and in practice. And he led by example. May he rest in peace, and may the Church find the wisdom and inspiration to elect his best possible successor.
He may actually be an NFL or NBA follower, and thus a Chicago Bears or a Chicago Bulls fan.
One thing is for sure: Chicagoland has its fair share of premium sports franchises.
