Damn mine broke and is in the shop..
a resolver is an electromechanical device looking like an electric motor. its function is to convert shaft rotation to electrical signal representing shaft position. a simulator generates phase signals that simulate a resolver. resolvers were used a lot to determine position of axis on machine tools, but were replaced by shaft encoders and other more modern stuff.
