I am an engineer recently out of PhD. I have a lot of experience in setting up specialist one-off instrumentation under challenging conditions ie salt water, remote etc... I am well aware of the regulations and tests which need to be performed in labs for top level testing for a EC marking but what is bes4t practise in terms of battery safety for prototypes and one-off portable units?

I need to power some 5v instrumentation which broadcasts over Wi-Fi. My take was to strip down a USB power bank from RS as the electronics and batteries have been around for some time.

There aren't any regulations regarding batteries, except to use them in a safe practice monitoring them in a charged and discharged condition, for explosion risk.

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking more on the lines of best practise. The risks are explosion or fire from vibration piercing temperature etc, I wondered if there was a design code equivalent of IEC 60950-1:2005. This just needs proving that the device can withstand vibration, being dropped, shorting etc
