As in the title, I have a Raspberry Pi (zero), which i would like to use 4 1.25V Rechargeable NiCad to provide external power. The problem is that I don't know a circuit design to power the Pi and at the same time charge it. Also, I need a protection circuit for the batteries. (I would also like to know how I could check when the batteries are almost drained) Thank you in advance.

Well, I this is probably a nooby question but do NiCad batteries over discharge?
Yes.
Do you really mean NiCd or the more common NiMH battery?

For fast battery charging and preventing overcharging you could use an IC such as this.
Look at Figure 3 in the data sheet for operating a load along with charging.
