Also, if I use a network cable, will I be needing the USB wireless adaptor?

 

That should all work fine with no need for a wireless adaptor if you have the network cable connected. You won't be able to update the calender without a keyboard etc of course. Even cheaper option would be to buy a cheap android pad (7" now as low as £20ish) and use the wifi then you could do everything on the touchscreen too.
