Question about turning on a relay with pullup resistor

Hi all,

I have a circuit that uses a SIPO shift reg and each output Q7 - Q0 is pulled up and goes to a schmitt inverter.

The output of the inverter should turn on and off a 12V relay.

Is this possible because I can't get this to work? am I missing something.

I have a 5V relay and this is working.

What inverter are you using? Applying 12V via the relay coil to an inverter with a 5V supply is likely to fry the inverter.
You could use a NPN transistor (or logic-level MOSFET) instead of the inverter. Drive the NPN base with the SR output, via a current-limiting resistor.
