Concerned about bringing this topic back on track! But I did notice in this months IET Engineering and Technology magazine (March 2007) that in the News in Brief section there is an article about a Canadian company who claim to have demonstrated what it claims is the worlds first commercially viable quantum computer. To quote the article: "The device incorporates a new type of analogue processor that uses quantum mechanics to drive the computation, instead of a conventional digital processor".

This is a touch vague (it is a News in Brief article), but would be interested in seeing more details as they become available.

I think it is D-Wave System. Although my IET mag seemed to be lost in ether space, I recalled that in mid February there was a news item mentioning that company demonstrating a 16-qubit quantum computer.

If I recalled correctly, it was a remote demonstration and the machine was housed in their lab somewhere in British Columbia.

Beat me to it! :D Get in touch with the IET, they will send you a replacement copy provided you ar a paid up member.

Quntum Computers are possible as a matter of fact they are in the developement stage. There is actually three different techniques in makeing a quntum computer. I can only explain two of them. One uses a Liquid and MRI technology to excite paticles (qunta) to spin. The magnetic field of MRI does this causeing its nieghbor to spin the opposite dirrection. Includeing there superposition state which has been proven experimentaly hundreds of times. The other uses lasers to spin the atomic or subatomic particles. Also there has been two programming alogarathims written for quntum computers Shors Alogarithm which is search program and another for logic gates the being of a qubit operating system. Oh by the way the schoringers cat is not a good example because macroscopic forces interfere with the cats atomic particles(qunta). Such as noise heat and vibration.
What that means at the subatomic level a particle can both spin right and left at the same time, has been proven. Another fact
you change the quntum material by observation. All possible out comes happen at once only at the quntum level.Thats why they talk in ranges and percents. This is hard for us to grasp because we evolved at the macroscopic level. Where there is one possible outcome. Look it up in a Short cut through time which realy has nothing to do with time travel. The author explains this better than I can.

Actually they found a way around that by useing four quntum particles by useing a pattern that works like a spiral cork screw gear mathmaticaly one goes left to right the other right to left depending on the spin of the particle.
By useing a quntum mechanics property I forgot the name of but what it means if you spin a quntum particle one way the other turns the other way thats next to it.Pick a state left is 1 or 0 is right or vise versus does not matter it works and you can program it just like any other computer. That was the othe programming alogarthim they fiqured out.

to know the future, we must record where every atom is, which already, becomes a problem according to HUB, we cannot know the definite position of a particle its postilion is inverse to its momentum, then we must record its trajectory. let me try and see something

mmm 10^77! would give you...... a large number, and that would only be naming these particles with different letter, plus dividing it by 62! letters and 0-9 numbers

please correct me if i'm wrong !!
plus if the universe is infinite, it would ad a funky variable =]

You don not need to know the future just the present 0 1 and a superposition in between 0 and 1 That is quntum computing in a nut shell.

Quntum Computer will be the ultimate code breakers because most internet and computer security it bassed on factoring a very large number to decipher a key. When quntum computers advance more in there processing power old binary bassed systems as opposed to trinary computers (quntum machines)will have vertualy no securtiy to portect there data.
